The best legal blog topics are usually hidden in plain sight. If you’ve consistently published content on your law firm website, you’re likely running out of legal blog topics to write about.
You may be tempted to write about the same laws, penalties, defenses, etc., over and over. However, that’s not what’s best for potential clients, Google, or your sanity.
After writing thousands of legal blog posts for countless law firms, I’ve developed an easy five-step method of finding the best legal blog topics for your practice area. Check them out below.

#1: Know Your Goals Before Considering Legal Blog Topics
In my opinion, there are two types of legal blog topics. One is about sharing relevant and helpful information related to your practice area. The other is about you and your legal services. While there is some gray area, those are pretty much your options.
With that in mind, both types of legal blog topics require unique keyword research strategies and legal content writing styles. For instance, writing a blog post to inform potential clients about a recent law change is vastly different from a legal blog topic about finding the best attorney.
#2: Check Out The Competition’s Legal Blop Topics
If you’re running out of legal blog topics, one of the fastest ways to get new inspiration is from your competitors. Check out the legal blog posts they’ve covered on their site. If you find that there is a gap in content, start there. Cover the same topics they cover (but you haven’t yet) and make it 2x’s better.
Make it unique, engaging, and search engine optimized. That means adding additional content, infographics, pictures, etc. Remember, all things the same; Google prefers better and more recent content over old/lacking content. Just be sure not to plagiarize your competitor’s content.
#3: Do Keyword Research - Go For The Easy Wins First
Once you’ve decreased the gap in legal blog topics between you and your competitors, the next step is to forge your own path. Think about unique issues that you’ve handled for clients in the past, and then plug them into Google to see what results you get.
In many cases, Google provides a “People also ask” section as well as a “related searches” section. You can start creating blog posts using those exact keyword phrases.
If you want to get a bit more technical (but not too much), you can also use an SEO tool like Ubersuggest to get additional keyword ideas. There is a free version and a relatively inexpensive paid version that you can use.
#4: Make Your Legal Blog Topic SEO Friendly
Making your legal blog topics, SEO-friendly is about more than keyword research. You should also consider the following before solidifying your blog post title:
Local Vs. State Vs. National: Certain blog topics are relevant regardless of where someone lives. For example, First Amendment rights. However, other topics are better suited for local or state searches, such as issues dealing with laws unique to your state or city. With that in mind, ensure that your legal blog post titles include the location (if necessary) and the keyword phrase you’re targeting.
Don’t Make Your Titles Too Long: Technically, there is no limit to how long you make your legal blog post title. However, research shows that roughly 60 characters (8-14 words) is the sweet spot for blog titles.
Consider the most popular blog titles: Lists and how-to guides outperform other types of blog posts by a landslide. While you don’t want to overdo it, making plenty of lists and guides will help your site stand out and increase rank more quickly.
#5: Make Your Legal Content Better Than Your Competitors
Once you’ve narrowed your list of legal blog topics, be sure to create content that outshines the content currently ranking for your chosen keywords. In some cases, that means adding more relevant information, including recent updates/changes to the law, making your content more search engine optimized, etc.
If you don’t create better legal content than your competitors, Google has no reason to increase the rank of your blog post. When creating your content, think, “What would my client like to know about this content, and what should they know?”
Develop your content with your potential clients in mind first, Google in mind secondly. That means giving the user everything they need and more in your legal blog post.
